What to Expect When Your Dog Comes Home from Boarding

At Carfield’s Kennels, we know how much you love your dog—and we want to make sure you’re fully informed about what’s normal after a boarding stay. Just like people, dogs can experience a short adjustment period when returning home. Here are a few common behaviors you might notice after your pup’s stay with us:

🐾 More Sleep Than Usual

Your dog may sleep more than usual for the first day or two. Staying at a kennel can be exciting and stimulating—with lots of new smells, sounds, and friends to interact with. Once home, your pup might simply be catching up on rest.

🐾 Changes in Appetite

It’s normal for dogs to eat a little less (or sometimes more) for a day or so after boarding. The excitement and routine changes can temporarily affect appetite. If your dog skips a meal but otherwise seems healthy, don’t worry—things usually return to normal quickly.

🐾 Thirst and Drinking Habits

Some dogs drink more water when they return home. While we provide clean, fresh water at all times, dogs sometimes wait to drink until they’re back in their own environment. It’s a good idea to monitor their water intake and ensure they don’t drink too much too fast.

🐾 Mild Tummy Upset

Occasionally, the excitement and change in environment can cause mild digestive upset. If your dog experiences a soft stool or a little gas, this is usually short-lived. We always recommend keeping an eye out and giving us a call if it lasts more than 48 hours.

🐾 Clinginess or Independence

Some dogs may become extra cuddly, while others might need a bit of space. This is completely normal! Being back home can bring out different reactions as your pup decompresses from their kennel adventure.

🐾 Vocalizing or “Talking”

It’s not unusual for dogs to be a little more vocal—whining, barking, or “talking” to you. They may be telling you all about their stay or simply expressing excitement to be home.
